Everything runs in your own browser. The file is read from your disk, re-encoded by your own device and handed back as a download, so there is no upload, no queue and no account. Most photographs still look fine at around 80 percent quality, which is where the slider starts, and the preview is there so you can judge that for yourself instead of trusting a number.

Format matters as much as the quality number. JPEG suits photographs, WebP is usually the smallest of the three at a comparable quality, and PNG is lossless, which makes it worth keeping only for screenshots, line art and images that need transparency.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are read, decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, and the site's Content-Security-Policy permits connections only back to its own origin, so the page could not upload one even if it tried.

Why did my PNG barely get smaller?

PNG is lossless, so the quality setting does not apply to it and re-saving a PNG as PNG rarely removes much. Converting it to WebP or JPEG, or reducing its dimensions, is what actually makes it smaller.

Does this remove EXIF data such as GPS location?

Yes. Re-encoding rebuilds the file from decoded pixels, so GPS coordinates, camera model and timestamps are not written into the result.

What is the largest image I can compress?

Up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels. Larger images are refused after reading the file header and before any decoding, because decoding one can exhaust memory and crash the tab.

Which quality setting should I use?

Around 80 percent is a sensible starting point for photographs, and the comparison shows what each setting costs. Screenshots, text and line art usually need a higher setting, or a lossless format such as PNG.
